Focus group based research – communicating food hygiene with ‘scores on the doors’
What we did

Greenstreet Berman carried out research into attitudes to a proposed (‘scores on the doors’) scheme for publicly displaying food hygiene inspection scores in business premises.

The certificates aim to inform customers of hygiene standards within the business and motivate proprietors to improve standards. Scoring schemes from the UK and overseas were researched and this was followed by a series of focus groups with UK businesses and consumers to establish their views on the design and likely use of such a scheme.

Greenstreet Berman produced dummy certificates for testing within the focus groups.

Value/Benefit
The work explored the role of hygiene certification in promoting improvements in food safety performance amongst food businesses. The results were used by the FSA to help design a large scale pilot of the scheme.
